BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Ask yourself the following questions. Some you may have thought about and others maybe you haven't given much thought at all.

WHAT IS YOUR OBJECTIVE?
Are you looking to sell in a couple years? Or is purpose of this renovation to update the look and provide better function now and in the future?

HOW LONG DO YOU PLAN TO LIVE IN THE HOME?
Maybe a couple more years, then you probably want to consider a different approach to the renovation, something that’s maybe not as costly or something that’s more classic or neutral. If you’re planning on living in your home long term, then naturally you’ll be spending a bit more and designing something that you really love.

WILL YOU BE LIVING IN THE HOME DURING RENOVATIONS?
This will add to the lead time and the construction duration, so that’s something that’s very important to know. It also adds to the level of protection and cleanliness that needs to be maintained during the renovation.

WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET?
This question has to be something that’s first answered by yourself so you understand what amount of money you want to spend. But it’s important to be honest with this number and know what that number is. Once you have a number, add a 10 to 20 percent contingency.

WHEN CAN WE GET STARTED?
A well-planned project is a well-executed project. Take the time to properly plan everything that you’re doing. Think about function and how your needs could change over time.

WHAT TO ASK A CONTRACTOR?
ARE YOU LICENSED AND INSURED?
Don't be afraid to ask to see the proof. Thinking you're not liable for an uninsured subcontractor who gets injured in your home is something you don't want to find out after the fact.

CAN I GET IT IN WRITING?
Don't agree to anything unless it's in writing and the terms are clear. More importantly, don't pay anyone until you do.

WHO ARE THE SUBCONTRACTORS THAT WILL BE IN MY HOME?
Make sure everything is presented to you on how your project will move forward and ultimately be completed.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SHOPPING DISCOUNTS?
Most contractors get a percentage trade discount on appliances. Only good contractors will offer you this discount as a courtesy.
WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO COMMUNICATE?
This is by far the most challenging aspect for contractors. Getting back to you on your questions, meeting your expectations and just showing up to the project.
